A woman walks into a bar and requests a drink from the bartender. The menu contains only icons and no descriptions. She gestures at the bartender and taps the icon of of a martini glass. He brings her a martini.

"Excuse me," says the woman, "but there's been a mistake. This martini doesn't have an olive."

He points at the menu. "Here's your mistake. Your intention is lost in the space between the signifier and the signified."

She mutters to herself, sipping her drink. "No accounting for sense in these kinds of places."
